For the second entry in this newsletter (found a better word than "blog"), we can begin by announcing a couple of quality of life features! Thanks to Samantha at RexburgChristian.com, you are now able to subscribe to this newsletter as well as revisit past entries we will be archiving.
As already mentioned, the Gospel begins with an understanding of the one true God and who He is. We touched upon a few things already, such as God's uniqueness over against His creation, as well as his holiness. So much more, however, must be said. I'd like to quote a little from a famous debate over the existence of God, in particular from the opening statement of Dr. Greg Bahnsen [arguing the affirmative position]:
"First of all, it is necessary at the outset of our debate to define our terms; as is always the case. And in particular here, I should make it clear what I mean when I use the term "God". I want to specify that I'm arguing particularly in favor of Christian theism, and for it as a unit or system of thought and not for anything like theism in general, and there are reasons for that. The various conceptions of deity found in the world religions are in most cases logically incompatible, leaving no unambiguous sense to general theism - whatever that might be. Secondly, I have not found the non-Christian religions to be philosophically defensible, each of them being internally incoherent or undermining human reason and experience. And thirdly, since I am by the grace of God a Christian, I cannot from the heart adequately defend those religious faiths with which I disagree. My commitment is to the Triune God and Christian worldview based on God's revelation in the Old and New Testament."
You'd be well served listening to the entire debate, if for no other reason than to see that the Christian faith is not unfounded beliefs and feelings - it is philosophically rigorous, down to the bone. I've always appreciated Bahnsen's candor - he was a cards-on-the-table man, so to speak. Like Dr. Bahnsen, I too am a Christian - a Protestant of the Reformed Baptist stripe. I hold to the historic Christian creeds (Apostles, Nicene, Chalcedonian, Athanasian) as well as the more recent 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith. I affirm the Bible to be what it says it is - the very breathed-out word of God, infallible and inerrant, and the supreme rule of faith in all matters of Christian doctrine and living. So there are my cards on the table - no surprises! My prayer is that I myself would be made small and God's truth, as revealed in His word, is what would remain in your thinking as the reader.
Until next time!
